four note friday 2.2 | Free Digital Downloads and Open Photovoice Office Hours

image showing the eight steps involved in the photovoice methodology: ideating, inviting, learning, (image) making, narrating, theming, presenting, and confirming.

This Friday's post is all about sharing information and providing support related to all things photovoice. As part of my ongoing work on and in photovoice field notes, which is ever-evolving, in this post, I am going to share three free digital downloads and provide details on the open photovoice office hours I will be offering throughout the next few months.

As I described in last week's post, this year I am working on making this space more generative, accessible, and multifaceted. My hope this that these digital downloads will be useful to those using and/or teaching about photovoice. And the main goal of the open photovoice office hours is to bring people together to discuss and learn more about the photovoice methodology. Please read on.

Photovoice in Eight Steps (Digital Download 1)

In my 2017 book on the photovoice methodology, I outlined an eight-step photovoice process. Thinking now about what I outlined in that book nearly a decade ago, I realize that some changes are necessary. Those changes are represented in this first download, which showcases the steps that may unfold as a photovoice project is undertaken. These steps are merely suggestive; they are not a lock-step formula. Furthermore, they may not unfold like a waterfall. And they may take place in different orders. Sometimes, you may have to take a few steps back before moving forward again. The steps are as follows: ideating, inviting, learning, (image) making, narrating, theming, presenting, and confirming. A preview of this first download is below.

And here are pdf versions—good for printing—of this download, featuring three different color schemas.

Photovoice Project Menus (Digital Download 2)

A little while ago, I wrote about the potential importance of using menus within photovoice projects. The following downloads are meant to help project facilitators brainstorm menu options to present to participants related to a variety of project facets such as photography prompts, ways to take photographs, and tools to use to keep the project components organized. In keeping with the color schema above, the previews are below, followed by the downloadable pdfs.

Multiple Streams Framework (Digital Download 3)

In yet another post, I wrote about the efficacy of the Multiple Streams Framework, developed by John Kingdon, in helping bridge the potential gap between photovoice project findings and resultant policy action. I recently consulted with the European Agency for Special Needs and Inclusive Education (EASNIE) on a photovoice project wherein this model was helpful. Again, the previews are below, followed by the downloadable pdfs.

Open Photovoice Office Hours

Last but not least, I am going to be offering three completely open photovoice office hours across January, February, and March. They will take place on Zoom, and preregistration is required. If you are working on a photovoice project and could use some support, come by! If you are simply interested in learning more about the methodology, come by as well! It will be relaxed and informal. If okay with the group, I aim to record the sessions and post them here for others' learning. Here are the dates and times:

Friday, January 30, 12:30 to 1:30 pm (EST)
Friday, February 27, 12 to 1 pm (EST)
Friday, March 20, 12 to 1 pm (EST)

If you are interested in joining me (and hopefully others!) to talk all things photovoice, please register by completing this form, which is also embedded below. From there, I will be in touch with the Zoom link(s) and any other pertinent details. Should be fun and enriching!

Please be in touch if you have any questions about the downloads or the upcoming office hours!
