four note friday 1.17 | Photovoice-Related Take-Aways from ASHE

This post will be short and sweet. Currently at the Association for the Study of Higher Education's (ASHE) Conference in Denver, Colorado, I have not had much downtime for thinking-writing. The conference experience has, however, included some space to reflect on a variety of photovoice-related take-aways, and I offer them up here.

Imagined Futures of Black Faculty
Imagined Futures of Black Faculty—a digital and visual scholarship project—was on full display at this year's conference. It is brilliant. It is spectacular. The expansiveness and scope of this layered and multimodal endeavor took my breath away. Please check out the website and all the attending pieces of this work. It is stunning.

Black Photovoice: (Re)Claiming Blackness Through a Critical Conversation on Space, Place, and the Embodiment of Photovoice
This special issue of Departures in Critical Qualitative Research highlights the amazing work of a group of scholars conceptualizing, practicing, and reflecting on Black photovoice. Many of these folks are higher education scholars. And this entire issue is open access. A must read. And I am working my way through. Please do the same.

Photovoice and AI
This year's presidential address was absolutely beautiful. Powerful words were lyrically uttered. One interesting, unexpected, and hilarious aspects of the address was the inclusion of several Sora 2-generated videos. This got me thinking about photovoice and AI. How are our orientations and relationships with photographic imagery changing—if at all—in the age of AI? This is a question that needs addressing.

Barbara Townsend Lecture
Had the opportunity to give this year's Barbara Townsend Lecture, which I have been thinking about and preparing for over the course of several weeks. The opportunity to talk about critical participatory action research as methodology and pedagogy was a treat. While the slides I used may not be very legible without the narration, they are shared below. Please enjoy.

Conferences are always an important punctuation in the day-to-day rhythms of scholarly life. Seeing good colleagues, getting-giving hallway hugs, and having impromptu conversations can be life-giving. This year's conference is still underway. Yet I know I will depart tomorrow with a cup refilled.

🥹 Thanks for spending a moment with me this Friday.
💌 If you’re new here, welcome! I hope this space becomes one you look forward to each week.
