four note friday 1.15 | Seeing Photovoice-in-Action, Using Google Alerts

screenshot of a Google Alert email

Learning about photovoice should not only include reading journal articles. One simple and easy way to stay connected to how photovoice is being used around the world is by setting up a simple Google Alert. While I most certainly have a Google Scholar Alert set up for photovoice, I also have a Google Alert. The former will help you keep the pulse on new scholarship. The latter will help you see photovoice-in-action. There is certainly some overlap. In other words, sometimes my Google Alerts include links to new journal articles (see the second link in the above screenshot). But usually, the alerts provide windows into all things photovoice projects across the globe.

Watching these projects emerge offers inspiration for how we might share our own work more broadly and connect with the kinds of audiences who can make change—think policy makers.

Setting up an alert is easy:
👉🏼 Go to Google Alerts
👉🏼 Type “photovoice”
👉🏼 Enter your email address
👉🏼 Click "Show options" and choose how often you want to receive updates (I recommend once a week)
👉🏼 Watch the stories come to you!

This week's four notes include interesting photovoice-related links that landed in my inbox this month. Each note-link-alert offers a glimpse into how photovoice continues to evolve and inspire across contexts. Take a look!

🧩 1. A Photovoice Project Explores the Power of Co-Production in Recovery

From the Centre for Addiction and Mental Health in Toronto, this project highlights how collaborative creation supports recovery and highlights what it means to co-produce knowledge.

🪶 2. Indigenous Students Share Stories Through Photovoice

At Simon Fraser University, a photovoice exhibition "featuring photographs taken by the Grandchildren of Residential School Survivors across Turtle Island (Canada and the United States)" will be hosted in early November.

💡 3. Community Energy Through the Eyes of Chelsea & East Boston Residents

A new exhibit showcases how residents use photography to express their hopes and concerns about energy, environment, and justice in their neighborhoods.

🎞️ 4. Teen Photo Exhibit Highlights Voices of Pajaro Valley

Teens in Watsonville, California share their perspectives on community's strengths and challenges through a photovoice exhibit.

Setting up a Google Alert is more than just a tracking tool—it’s a window into the active and emergent practice of photovoice as it unfolds across the world. Try it out, and you might find new ideas, unique inspiration, or even helpful templates to get your project seen.
