This is photovoice field notes, a new project I've, Dr. Amanda O. Latz, been dreaming about and working on for some time. Thanks so much for being here.

This is a space for people who are curious about the photovoice methodology and using photography, storytelling, empathic understandings, and critical dialogue to better understand the world around them for the purpose of making positive change. Whether you're a seasoned academic, a nonprofit leader, a graduate student, or simply someone drawn to the power of images and voices, photovoice field notes is for you.

At its heart, this project is about creating space for reflection, learning, and connection around the practice of photovoice—a critical participatory action research approach that invites people to share their experiences and perspectives through photographs and narratives.

Below are some additional details.

four note friday

I've been publishing a weekly newsletter called four note friday since July of 2025. Each issue, posted on Fridays, includes four short reflections, insights, tips, resources, activities/exercises, or provocations drawn from my experience with photovoice.

These notes (might) include:

  • Questions and tensions in photovoice work
  • Reflections on the academic literature and news articles
  • Ideas for activities and exercises
  • Updates on resources, workshops, events, or tools

The first seven issues are completely free, and the first issue of each month will be free for everyone indefinitely—either through subscription or directly from the site. Full access to the weekly newsletter and all archives will only be available to paid subscribers.

What’s Coming Next?

This is just the beginning. I hope. Over the coming months, I plan to grow photovoice field notes into a space for:

  • Consulting and training for nonprofits, research teams, and others
  • Digital downloads to support your photovoice project
  • Monthly office hours and community Q&As
  • Occasional guest features with leaders in the field

My aim is to build this project and this site slowly and intentionally while being attuned and attentive to feedback along the way. Photovoice is near and dear to my heart, and I want leverage this space to learn and grow alongside like-minded others.

Be Part of the Start

Right now, the best way to support this work is to:

  • Subscribe to the newsletter (free or paid)
  • Share the site with others who may benefit
  • Reach out if you’re working on a project and want to connect (photovoicefieldnotes@gmail.com)

Thanks again for being here.

Warmly,
Mandy (Dr. Amanda O. Latz)
